Connected Visual Representations for Probability (Venn, Tree, 2-Way Tables, etc)

The visual connections between diagrams in Probability are shown in this 1 page document. After teaching AP Statistics for 5 years and seeing students solve problems using multiple methods, I searched to find these connections and help other teachers see the validity of different methods in the same problem (instead of "well you do this problem this way"). After finding nothing on the internet, I created it myself. Now teaching Geometry, every year I make students do a Binary Data Collection pro

This project has students collecting class data and displaying it in multiple ways, showing how those ways are connected. It helps them work with a Venn Diagram to represent "AND" from the cells in a 2-way Table and shows those cells in a Tree too. Students create the different types of questions that will be on the assessment: basic, "and", "or", "given" and independent. My "Sample" had my tree symbolically mislabeld (the M should be P(MlF) or P(MlF') etc and I would have liked all the "And"s l

Experience

National Board Certified teacher with 30 years at Dublin Coffman HS. Currently District Content Lead for HS Mathematics. 20 years teaching AP Calculus BC, 18 years Honors Pre-Calculus, 5 years AP Statistics, 6+ years Geometry and now finishing CCP certification.

Teaching style

Problem First. Group Ideas to solve an initial problem then workshop model - direct instruction mini-lesson on mathematical truths needed to solve the problem, practice time with groups and vertical surfaces, reflection. Traditional tests with no retakes but summative projects and opportunities to show growth.

My own education history

Bachelors of Science in Mathematics, University of Notre Dame, full ride scholarship, Glenna R. Joyce. Masters of Math Education, The Ohio State University. National Board Certification in 2001, recertification in 2011 and 2021, finishing last recertification right now. 19 hours of graduate level mathematics courses from OSU and Otterbein University.
