Combine Like Terms - Scavenger Hunt / Task Card / BTC Thin Slicing

The focus is on Combining Like Terms. Students get introduced to this in 6th and 7th grade. And in 8th grade positive and negative numbers are used for the constants and variables. These problems sets are written with 8th grade students in mind. Having a clear understanding of how to combine positives and negatives is essential prior to solving multistep equations introduced in 8th grade. The vertical number line is included for students struggling with positive and negative numbers. Think

Teaching style

Welcome to Let’s Talk Math – Scavenger Hunts, Task Cards, Worksheets, and Thin Slicing problems for BTC I'm Mark Arnez, and I’m thrilled you’re here. With over 20 years of experience teaching middle school math—including Algebra 1 and Integrated Math—I’ve dedicated my career to helping students build strong, lasting confidence in math. My passion is simple: to make complicated math feel simple and approachable. I believe every student can succeed in math when given the right tools at the right time. That’s why my resources are designed like "training wheels"—providing just enough support to build understanding and confidence. Once students are ready, those supports can come off, and they can ride forward on their own. Just like learning to ride a bike, I want math to feel like an adventure—not a struggle. These worksheets and resources are crafted to be clear, purposeful, and even a little bit fun. Whether you're looking for scaffolded practice, visual aids, or step-by-step approaches, you'll find tools here to help your students succeed. It is my hope that the materials in this store inspire confidence and spark a smile along the way. Let’s help students not just learn math—but enjoy the ride.
