Have your students vote on their favorite texts from the year by using this bracket. After narrowing down the selections, students will be able to choose the top text or thematic unit of the year. This activity also works as a review before finals and as a way for teachers to receive student feedback about the text choices they read during the year.

Creating a found poem from literature is a creative way for students to show their understanding of characterization or a theme displayed in the literature being studied. Two types of projects are included - one where the student creates both thematic and character found poems for one project and a second where the student creates either a thematic or character focused found poem. Rubrics are included along with an example of a found poem displayed as required in the project criteria.
After reading Agatha Christie or Sherlock Holmes short stories and novels, let your students try their hand at creating their own mysteries for other readers to solve. A fun idea would be to have your students write for the younger students at the school to read. This writing assignment allows for students to practice writing dialogue, learn elements of the mystery, and practice including new vocabulary words in their stories. A rubric is included.

Students will have the opportunity through this assignment to design a quilt which represents their family heritage. Students will be able to retain more of the story and follow the plot more purposely when using this movie guide along with viewing the 1995 Emma Thompson version of Sense and Sensibility. I have used this guide with my own students to much success. Answers are provided.
This 50 questions comprehensive test is designed for assessing students after reading and discussing the novel Jane Eyre in its entirety. The test can be answered using a Scantron or students can write their answers on the answer sheet provided. All questions are quotes from the novel. In the first section students identify the speaker and in the second section, students will identify which character is being described. Answer key provided.

Using this movie guide will provide students a way to follow the movie and to fill in quotes from the characters' dialogue which are taken from the novel. It will be helpful to use subtitles while viewing the film in order for the students to see the text. Because the answers will be spoken too quickly for students to write them down on the guide, I recommend your pausing the film at certain points to go over the notes or to fill them in at the end of each class as a review of what the students
By the end of this lesson, students will have gained an understanding of what telegrams were and how they functioned historically.
