Students are given the opportunity to work with the recursive formula in Arithmetic and Geometric Sequences. Students will find the common ratio or common difference from the recursive formula. Then, they will use this information and the first term (which is given in the problem) to use the explicit formula to find a given term. The recursive formula is not very useful to use but is a necessary topic in the standards. This resource gives students exposure to this formula.

Directions: Put student desks in groups of 4. Cut out each of the following cards and tape them to the corner of each student desk. Set a 60 seconds – 90 seconds timer. Students complete the problem on their student handout. Then they rotate to another desk in their group. At the end of 4 rotations, set a 2-minute timer where students in the group check each other’s answers and make any corrections if needed.
