Forty-two colorful, real-life word problems that can be solved using one of seven basic strategies: Guess & Check, Make a List, Make a Drawing or Diagram, Work Backwards, Use or Make a Table, Use Logic, and Look for a Pattern. These strategies will give students added skills when attacking word problems in the future. They are great for overheads or working in groups!
You can find separate lesson plans for each strategy on this website, but this includes them all.
Using statistics from the 2012 World Series Champions, the San Francisco Giants, students calculate range, mean, median, and mode.

Math.6.NS.B.3
A real-life math activity in which students go back-to-school shopping on a budget. They must compute and compare prices for clothes and shoes that are on sale (marked down by a certain percent or marked down by a certain fraction.) They will also compute discounts for buying in bulk, all the while keeping track of the amount they have already spent and the amount they have left.
Common Core Standards: Math.Content.5.NF.B.6; 5.NF.B.7;
5.NBT.B.7; 5.NBT.A.4
Students will use data from a trip to the zoo to solve problems of area, perimeter, percents, fractions, and points on a grid system. Students are provided with a grid map of the zoo and a key to read the map. That makes this a challenging exercise since students must constantly be moving between the map and key in order to find answers.
Common Core Standards: Math.4.MD.A.3; Math.5.NBT.A.3; Math.5.NBT.B.7; Math.6.RP.A.3.C
Students respond to questions by analyzing, comparing, and performing simple computation on data provided in a table of statistics based on the New York Yankees 2012 baseball season.
Appropriate for Grades 4 & 5
This activity provides students with real-life practice at converting
recipes containing fractions. Four dinner recipes are written to serve either 4, 6, 12, and 16 people. Students must convert all four recipes to serve 8 people.

A real-life math lesson in which students are required to compute ratios, post to input/output tables, read and interpret tables, and respond to questions.
Common Core Standards: 6RPA.1; 6RPA.2; 6RPA.3
Students use data provided to measure and cut out "carnival booths" using given measurements of either perimeter or area, then glue them onto construction paper according to directions.
Common Core Standards: 3.MD.5,6,7; 4.MD.3
Students complete an activity the requires them to use of logical reasoning, decimal multiplication, and two and three digit multipliers. They will answer real-life problems about renting an apartment and creating a budget.
Common Core Standards: Math. 5.NBT.A.3 & 5.NBT.B.7
Students roll 3 dice and using any combination of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, parentheses, and exponents to write numerical expressions to which the answers are numbers from 1-10. Those answers “knock down” that number pin. Each player takes turn rolling until they have “bowled” all ten frames. Good for centers too.
Common Core Standards: Math.Content.5.OA.1&2
Math.Content.6.EE
Students answer word problems requiring them to calculate fractions of prices of candy.

Experience
I have taught 12 years in Wake County School System, Raleigh, North Carolina, teaching 4th and 5th grade in elementary school and 6th grade math and science.
In 2005, I earned my National Board Certification for K-6.
Teaching style
I prefer to create my own lesson plans, using real-life, hands-on activities when possible. I have tons of experience in curriculum mapping, differentiation, and accommodations for varied learning styles and special needs.
Awards & shining teacher moments
I have been nominated for teacher-of-the-year for 11 of my 12 years teaching..
My own education history
I went back to school in mid-life to become a teacher. I feel fortunate to have attended California State University in Dominguez Hills, California. CSUDH began as a college for training teachers for the Los Angeles School System, so the curriculum was specifically designed to give teachers a broad education across all subjects in addition to regular teacher instruction classes, incorporating the latest pedagogy and methods. I graduated Summa Cum Laude and was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award for my graduating class. In 2005 I earned my National Board Certification.
Additional biographical information
For two years, I wrote and reviewed questions developed at North Carolina State University that were to be used for standardized test questions throughout the state, meeting state curriculum goals and objectives..
