Memoir Writing Student Prompts - songs and 'meme-ory'

Kicking off a memoir or reflective writing unit? It can be really hard to get students feeling comfortable about sharing personal ideas and experiences. This is why I start with short, low-stakes reflections based on songs and memes. Each prompt asks students to recall a memory or experience they've had which they associate with a song or popular meme. You'll note that the memes I've chosen are school friendly and widely known - I didn't want obscure internet memes that might rely too much on s

Macbeth Quote Analysis Quiz: Literary Devices Focus

This editable quiz is a great way for students to test their knowledge of both the play and the literary devices Shakespeare uses. It is a complex quiz that could be completed in pairs or small groups, or even individually. I give ample time to kids for this quiz because it is genuinely quite hard. Teachers can edit the answers to suit the literary devices they have covered in class. Most of the answers are discussed in my YouTube video about literary devices, found here: https://www.yout

Newspaper Cover Template

This newspaper front page template is fantastic for creative tasks. In the examples, you can see we've read the amazing picture book called 'The Water Tower' by Gary Crew, and students turned their hypotheses about what happened into front-page news. The template is easy to use and fun for kids to use as a basis for their own designs. If students didn't want to complete the short article, they can replace it with an ad to be totally realistic to Murdoch-owned newspapers! The template could be

FREEBIE: Macbeth Quote Word-Match Quiz

This is a great 2-page quote quiz to help students engage with and memorise quotes from Macbeth. The column on the right includes missing words from a range of quotes on the left. Students can cross out each word once they've found the correct quote it belongs to. A bonus question is included at the end which is very hard - some students do actually know this! This is an easy black and white photocopier job, double sided for the kids and the answers are included for you, too. Enjoy!

2023 Essential English CIA Classroom Workbook (FREEBIE)

Hi to my fellow Essential crew across Queensland! I'm back - and feeling generous. This Word doc booklet should get you and your kids through a large portion of this term in preparation for the Common Internal Assessment (either this term or in Term 2). The topics this year for 2023 are representations of: • the impact of science and technology • human space exploration ...so you'll note that a lot of the booklet has been tweaked to fit this theme and get kids thinking about these topics (ins

2022 Queensland Essential English: Common Internal Assessment Workbook

Hello to the QLD Essential English crew! This booklet is for those of you embarking on the CIA (Common Internal Assessment) journey. It can be a pretty dry unit (lol those who know, know), but obviously it's so important that kids pass it. This is an edited version of my own booklet that I used last term, which features in my YouTube videos (link below). In the last pages of the booklet are some photos of class annotations to assist with activities. It's been a hard year and I decided I wan

Animal Farm - characterisation handout

A great resource to print for students to annotate each character. I ask them to include a quote in each box as well as label who the character represents in the real-world. For instance, Napoleon representing Stalin. I model how to do this for the first character, then allow them to complete this handout at their own pace. I also allow them to look up words and synonyms online. Have fun! Video on this product here: https://youtu.be/zp4OsvLK10E Art is not my own! Repeat! THIS ART IS NOT MINE! I

Additional biographical information

I am a high school English teacher who loves to draw. I was inspired to create these illustrations after a teaching experience in which I had to teach Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice and The Taming of The Shrew starting in the same week, knowing nothing about either. Eeeeeek! Not only is Shakespeare slightly daunting for many kids (and adults!), his plays include a lot of characters. Particularly challenging, was The Taming of The Shrew, which includes character names like Gremio, Grumio, Tranio, Petruchio and Lucentio. Before I lost my mindio, I picked up a pen and set about drawing character maps to save my sanity. For teachers or tutors, these illustrations can be useful as a visual guide for students while you tell the story or discuss the texts. For students, the character maps can help you remember who-is-who while you engage with the story. Keep it simple, stupid! Enjoy the bare bones of these meaty classics.
