Memoir / Autobiography Writing: Creative Writing Assignment

Created by

If you are reading an autobiography in class, this activity pairs well with that. The documents included ask students to write their own condensed, personal memoir. I also included my own brief story that could serve as a student example. There is also a self-revision worksheet included, too.

This is a paper I've done in my "American Dream" unit with ELA 8 Advanced students. That being said, the structure could used for any grade from 7 - 11. I've also include some additional supporting documents, including a list of possible topics AND links to reviewed websites depending on the topic students have selected. A grading rubric is included as well.

This document includes an excerpt from Simon Wiesenthal's (Holocaust camp survivor and famous Nazi hunter) book The Sunflower. The handout asks students to analyze how they would have responded to the situation Weisenthal found himself in during the Holocaust. (It should be noted that this conversation is one that Weisenthal WANTS the audience to have; the discussion about his action or lack of action is at the heart of his text. In addition to having students record their own thoughts in regar

This is presentation gives students a definition of both tone and connotation. They then move through connotation practice by placing specific words on a continuum from "negative" up to "positive." I included a few famous pieces of artwork in the presentation and an excerpt from Poe. Students are asked to analyze the included pieces as a way to look at both tone and connotation.

There are three main document and a few support documents included in this assignment. The three documents are original independent reading documents that divided the Renee Watson book Piecing Me Together into three sections. The work can be completed as a class discussion or as independent work. Personally, I have the work completed independently and then have Socratic Seminar. The discussion documents are a bonus; these push students to go a little deeper into discussion and serve as a remin

This is a Power Point and handout outlining the adaptable plot structure of the "Hero's Journey." Though this concept was extensively written about by scholar Joseph Campbell, I'm including the slightly simpler 12-step version from Christopher Vogler's The Writer's Journey. For each of the steps, I provide a paraphrased definition and my own examples from Star Wars Episode IV and Disney's Moana. The "Hero's Journey" is a great way to demonstrate to students the timeless aspects of literature, w

I've taught Holocaust education for around 14 years, and this novel is the staple of that unit. I've refined this document over the years, and I guarantee it will allow your students to engage the novel in a thoughtful way. Though this is an "independent reading" packet, students can certainly also discuss the ideas in class. (I usually host a Socratic Seminar each day a section of work in the packet is to be completed.) This document includes: - three sections for students to complete - releva

This activity includes a "Characterization" Google Slides presentation and deep analysis of the three main characters within Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Within the "Sleepy Hollow" character analysis, students are also asked to relate Katrina, Ichabod, and Brom to specific themes as well. I've include passages that illustrate specific and significant moments for each character. Within the packet, there is an opportunity to explore some creative writing as well. How would Ic

For this activity, students are asked to do some independent research regarding two mythological allusions in A Midsummer Night's Dream. Upon completing this research, they will compose a flash fiction that modernizes one of their two researched myths. (The assignment includes both a "standard" option and an "enrichment" option. This document also includes a silly, original flash fiction I wrote modernizing an aspect of Heracles' labors. This activity would also work well in a creative writing

Whoever said Shakespeare is timeless has never tried to teach the "Bard of Avon" to a class of middle / high school students. Still, I definitely agree that Shakespeare is wonderful and IS timeless. This activity is a silly one, but usually high in student interest: I've written several raps for Act 1 and Act 2 of A Midsummer Night's Dream. These can be broken-up and performed by the teacher or a handful of students or a combination of both. Additionally, the lesson includes a "rap review" ac

I'm also including the study guide that goes along with this work. Students really need a strong grasp of both the plot develops of the scene and literary analysis to do well on this exam.

Please note, if you have the link for this file, be sure to click the three vertical dots and then "make a copy" and edit within that copy. This is a figurative language pre-assessment. It is short answer and not multiple choice. Students also rank their comfort level with a particular term. Though it does take longer than a traditional multi-choice pre-assessment, I think that the short answer format does a better job of capturing what the student truly knows or doesn't know. The handbook reveals my thoughts on the course, expectations I have for students, and my grading policy. This document also sets the tone for the year; students come away thinking the class will be structured and rigorous. Though Socratic Seminar challenges students to find meaning in the text by making up their own questions, this guide serves as a framework for those questions and also refers students to specific passages as needed. Experience

A little about me: I’m an 8th grade English teacher in Western Pennsylvania. I’ve been teaching for 14+ in the same region. I’ve co-taught Review Language Arts 8, taught general education Language Arts 8, and taught both 6th grade and 8th grade summer school. For the past three years, I’ve been blessed to be allowed to write curriculum for - and teach - an Advanced Literacy 8 course.

Teaching style

My true passion is in creative writing, and I’ve tried my best to incorporate creative writing into my lessons and handouts as much as I can because - at least I’ve found - creative writing is a way to reach-out to the less engaged students. Allowing students to craft a piece of literature that didn’t previously exist is one of the greatest gifts the ELA teacher can give. (Sorry if that is a bit too philosophical.) For most of the work I post, you’ll see I tend to over-plan. My philosophy is simply this: I want to give students all the necessary set-up for them to succeed. Sometimes, more is more. Expectations, execution, and clear grading expectations all play important roles in the learning outcomes and - when necessary - the final product produced by students

Awards & shining teacher moments

Before he retired, a formed colleague gave me a plague that says, "World's goodest teacher." Also, a student made me a sticker that says, "Subject to spontaneous rants."

My own education history

I have a bachelor’s degree in English with a focus on Creative Writing from Allegheny College. (Go Meadville Gators!) I was lucky enough to attend the University of Pittsburgh for my Master’s in Secondary English Education. (If you are a Penn State fan, don’t hold it against me; I’m not a huge sports guy.)

Additional biographical information

My store is called Baxter Media in honor of my own black cat, Baxter. He shares the name with the Maine state park. (My wife is from “Vacationland.” Whoever called it that hasn’t lived through too many Maine winters.) Finally, if you have any lesson ideas you'd like to see on my page, feel free to reach out.
