This project is designed to help students explore the different standards that encompass the unit Ecology. For Texas this is TEKS 12 and for NGSS HS-LS2-(2-8). I allow the students the freedom of creating an ecosystem of their own, or they may use an existing ecosystem found in nature (if creativity is not their strong area ). A list of focus root terms that can be used to help students understand the meaning of some of the more complex vocabulary in this unit. This is a great way to help ESL students learn science words faster, and possibility make a few connections with their primary language. For those that struggle with spelling, this also aids in learning how to spell words they normally find difficult. It also helps science support ELA classes, and improve student writing and reading skills.
