Professor Millie Lawhon, is a Bilingual/Dual Language Educator with 18 years of experience and published author. She has a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and a B.A in Bilingual/TESOL Education.
Ms. Lawhon was born in New York City. She lived in Manhattan, N.Y. until the age of 10. At that time, her parents decided to return to their homeland, Puerto Rico, USA territory.
Her early primary education was at the Public School 80 at Manhattan, N.Y. It was during that last school year at P.S. 80 that she discovered her passion for creative writing. Who to thank for it? Her fifth grade teacher Mr. De Blasi.
Every Monday, he would have a couple of writing prompts written on the chalkboard for the students to select from and start a writing process that would last the whole week. “Oh, no! Not again!” young Millie and the other kids would whisper among themselves. “Would he ever stop?” No, he didn’t.
.
Also, he would not accept a story with two or three sentences. Dictionaries were available, pencils, and plenty of papers; no excuses allowed.
The wow factor one day finally came. It was the day she finished a story that was good enough to meet Mr. De Blasi’s final approval. It was titled “The Box in the Cave”. Only fragment of the story remains in Millie’s memory. But the wow moment has endure time.
Mr. De Blasi encouraged writing among his students. He became a role model for Ms. Lawhon, who eventually became an Elementary School Teacher and the author of the Torres Family Bilingual Book Series, “Curious Quique/Curioso Quique” This is book (1) one of a series of nine bilingual children science story books.
Ms. Lawhon hopes to inspire children to read, write, and learn about science as they expand their vocabulary in the target languages, Spanish/English.
