Fifteen years ago, I took a job as a 1:1 educational assistant for students with autism and severe maladaptive behaviors -- I had no idea the road I was about to venture on. I held a few positions in my school before giving in and becoming a teacher. I spent two years in front of the classroom, changing the lives of the students in front of me. Life took a few turns and I unfortunately had to step down from teaching and left the only school I'd ever known. I anxiously accepted an assistant teacher position in the city with a population I'd never worked with before. I fell in love with special education even more! I now spend my days at a desk, helping my school from behind the scenes. While I love what I do, it lacks the creativity I had from making lesson plans, developing routines and schedules, personalizing and designing token boards for my students, and making new bulletin boards every few months...I could go on and on.
