This project requires students to practice measuring and converting measures to a scale. Students will measure up to 5 items in a room at their home, convert the measurement to scale, and then draw the scaled item on a piece of graph paper. A reflective paper is also required to explain work and reasoning. An opportunity to extend the project into 3-D is also included.

Student can show what they know about the coordinate plane by creating their own design to be graphed. After students have created their design, a classmate can practice their graphing skills by plotting the points.

Students will review or be assessed on what they have learned in a unit on geometry and measurement by using attributes to write their name. Specific measurements and shapes are required. Students have a lot of fun with this project and get very creative. It is so fun to let them share with their classmates.

Students will the the concept of decimal multiplication by using a hundreds grid to multiply decimals. They will also be given models in which they will write the equation of the model shown.

Students will learn what shapes make tessellations and what transformations they must make. Students will then create their own tessellations.

This handout is an informational writeup for teachers or parents to help understand using models to multiply and divide fractions and decimals. I used it to send home with my students so their parents could see what we were doing in class and so they did not jump to the traditional algorithm with their kids.
