Plays-to-Go

PLAYS-TO-GO is a 25 page program for introducing 4-6 graders to theater arts activities, including creative playwriting and other aspects of the theater, such as: producing, directing, and acting in student-written plays. The program was tested in several elementary schools and was a big hit with the students. Experience

Ten years as a teacher of English, Spanish and Drama; three years in the Minnesota State Dept. of Education; twenty years with Britannica Films; one year with the U.S. Peace Corps; the remaining years as a free-lance writer and educational consultant. As a Peace Corps volunteer in Jamaica I worked with students with special needs.

Teaching style

I believe that learning occurs best when students are involved in creative projects with initial direction by the teacher and when they have ongoing access to the means to test and verify their work.

Awards & shining teacher moments

The Honors/Awards of which I am most proud are those I received for the plays i have written and submitted into competition. My play "Golden Wedding" was a regional winner in the Midwest Playwrights' program. "Turkeys of a Feather" was a winner at two different contests conducted in two states. My play, "Finnegan's Wake", received an honorable mention from Ohio State. My children's play book, "Doing Something Nice, Inc. and Other Short Plays," was honored by a librarian as the most popular book in the library, not an official award but something I am proud of.

My own education history

I am a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College and Mankato State University. I have also attended the University of Minnesota and the University of Ecuador in Quito, Ecuador. For the past ten years i ave worked as a state supervisor for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) program.

Additional biographical information

In addition to having completed five full-length plays, my wife and I are authors of a novel, "Soon Come," about the experiences of a middle-aged couple who chuck everything to join the Peace Corps and spend a tumultuous year in service in Jamaica.
