Bracket Algebra: Chapter 1 - No More Double Signs

Bracket Algebra
For a quick overview of the Bracket Method click here. This is the 1st chapter on "the new way" of teaching fundamental algebra: simplifying. It does not use PEMDAS; and you will be amazed at how great kids can be at fundamental algebra! This chapter throws out the old middle school nomenclature of double signs: plus or minus attached to a positive or negative sign superscripted. These are never used in "real" algebra. While throwing out bad habits, we start to instill the concept of sign

In the 3rd chapter, we start putting things together. After learning how to Bracket terms in Chapter 2, students will now learn how to multiply algebraic terms. It's as simple as "mash" potatoes. We use the word MASH as a visual, verbal, and auditory cue of what to do, when things are "mashed" together. They love it...and they think they are turning into math geniuses. **Video Notes on YouTube Channel: Bracket Algebra (Just hit the play button!)What they will learn:How to multiply (MASH)

For a quick overview of the Bracket Method click here. Chapter 2 is the key to understanding algebra without using PEMDAS. It is so easy, and yet, this is the only rule you need to know for order of operations! You will never, ever, have to search an expression for PEMDAS again. This chapter takes the thinking out of simplifying. **Video Notes on YouTube Channel: Bracket Algebra (just hit the play button!)What they will learn: They think they know PEMDAS...but they don't really know PEMDA

Teaching style

Emphasize the Fundamentals..with humor. Show them, use fun visual, verbal and auditory cues, and practice. Challenge them with big problems, and let them see how great they can be. PEMDAS has never been effective! So I developed a method to teach "order of operations" without all the convoluted rules; without searching the entire expression for specifics. This new approach uses a simple, left to right sequence. Consistent, solid rules. Uses verbal, visual, and auditory cues for recall

My own education history

I attended the Air Force Academy right out of high school. After a successful first year, I changed course, and headed to Brown University, where I earned my BA in Business Economics. Moved to Colorado, and knew I wanted to teach and coach. It is at Colorado University where I received my Teaching Certificate. While teaching in Colorado, I earned my Masters in Education Administration from the University of Phoenix.

Additional biographical information

Since 1994, I've been teaching math and coaching Football/Track/Speed-Strength.I started in Colorado at Centaurus High School where the Bracket Method was created. Then I moved over to Monarch High School, where I started formalizing the method. After 8 years in Colorado, I went back home to teach in my hometown at Kingston High School. It was here I developed the Bracket Algebra Curriculum, copyrighted and published the workbook, created the website, and continue to share this method with other teachers all over the county.
