I love doing R.A.F.T. activities with my kids for formative assessments. They get a kick out of seeing which role I'll give them for any given unit. The purpose of the R.A.F.T. method is to help students write fluently and purposefully for an audience, often making them shift their perspective as a writer. Role--Who are you? Audience--Who are you writing to? Format--What kind of writing will you do? (letter, poem, story) Topic--What do you want to talk about/discuss?

Are you like me? You see all these great ideas online using paint chips in the classroom... but the nearest Home Depot is over 70 miles away! Frustrating!! So... I got creative and made my own. There are 15 different color options that you can print however you'd like. I printed mine on cardstock for sturdiness. Laminating the printed chips will also help them last longer. I also added a thin black line to help with cutting. Let your creativity in the classroom soar!

This is a set of four different RAFT activities that can be used during the last few weeks of school to keep the enthusiasm going. I use RAFT activities in my class all the time as formative assessments for my units, and my 5th graders love them. The purpose of the R.A.F.T. method is to help students write fluently and purposefully for an audience, often making them shift their perspective as a writer. Role--Who are you? This graphic organizer can be used during your study of the Gold Rush. The smallest circle is used at the beginning of the unit. The largest circle at the end, and the middle one can be used anytime in between. It's interesting, both to the teacher and the students, to see how thinking changes throughout a unit based on what they are learning.
