Quilt by Design - A STEM Project with Area

In Quilt by Design, students create a quilt block from either paper or fabric. They can choose from a list of block designs or create their own. The project can be differentiated in several ways: by requiring certain shapes within the quilt block, by requiring that students create their own. There are two versions of the project included; in the second version, students are required to determine how much paper/fabric they will need for their quilt block and request that amount from the teacher.

How Big Are You? (distance learning)

This project invites students to create a game to review or show mastery of finding the area of triangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, and composite figures. Students may work individually or in pairs. The work can be differentiated by choosing different shapes or by requiring students to incorporate fractions and/or decimals. Included in the teacher's notes is a link to a Google doc with the student portion of the project.

Teaching style

Working together, students, parents, and teachers can all have successful learning experiences. Teaching is a team sport in which all of the players work toward the common goal of enriching students' lives.

My own education history

I received my BA from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, TX, with a major in chemistry and a minor in math. My student teaching was in the San Antonio public school system. Subsequently, I received my MA from the University of Texas at Austin in the same areas.
