My kids have loved talking about being good citizens and how they can become better citizens. Use this as an activating or a summarizing strategy to get your kids excited about good citizenship!!

Your students will choose between urban, suburban, and rural community areas in which they would prefer to live in. They will develop an opinion topic sentence, three supporting reasons, and a conclusion sentence. I hope your students enjoy doing this opinion piece as much as mine did! The students will read each of the short paragraphs, and draw conclusions to figure out what is happening in the story. I also included a second page of adjectives (comparing with and special) since this was the grammar skill we were working on for the week. This could also be used in Guided Reading groups, Literacy Centers, or Literature Circles.

After a lesson or unit on idioms, compile this class book so your students can see what they've learned. This is a great conclusion to reading "Amelia Bedelia", and allowing your students to "become Amelia Bedelia" through illustration.

This Reading Log is great to send home for daily Homework Reading. It holds the students accountable for fiction vs. nonfiction, recalling favorite events in the story, story elements (characters and setting), author's purpose, and making predictions. This is a great way to assess your students' knowledge and application of fables. You may choose to complete one after each fable, or allow them to choose their favorite fable and complete the graphic organizer. Weekly Spelling Test that includes five bonus words blanks! I usually use more difficult words that follow our weekly spelling pattern, but this would also be a good time to plug in content vocabulary words (science, social studies, or math). Use this as your Weekly Homework Reading Log to hold your students accountable for more things than just reading!! The students have to idenfity what type of literature (fiction or non-fiction) as well as types of speech (contraction, noun, verb, adjective). I use this often as a Formative Assessment to see what my kids are reading and if they're able to identify parts of speech.

Have your students respond to these picture prompts by making up a fictional narrative describing the picture. I gave my kids one of these a day during Writing to practice going through the Writing Process independently.
