March Madness: Finding the Total Number of Brackets

Did you know that there has never been a recorded perfect bracket for the NCAA basketball championship tournament? That may have to do with the fact that there are over 9 quintillion possible brackets! In this exploration, students are guided to first determine the number of games played in the tournament. I like to focus on all components of math proficiency including conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, strategic competence, and adaptive reasoning, meeting students where they are. I enjoy trying to find ways to motivate students and make math fun!
