This is a semester long lab where students are given a small houseplant to care for throughout the semester in their homes. With the use of digital photography students will check in throughout the semester on the health of their plant babies. This is a lab that could be used in a variety of classes to reinforce responsibility, life skills, time management, plant care, and accountability.

This week-long activity will give students the opportunity to learn first about the historical significance of the Irish Potato Famine. They will analyze the lyrics of the Skibbereen and watch a series of short videos on the topic. They will be prompted to create a digital timeline followed by a detailed rubric of a Potato Late Blight research paper.

Experience

It has been a privilege to serve students and adults as an educator for the last 18 years. Empowering young men and women of all abilities levels to set goals for their lives while giving them the tools to succeed in college, their careers, and in life.

Teaching style

In my classroom, I utilize a variety of strategies to engage my students including: Project Based Learning, Service Learning, Case Studies and Real World Examples. My classroom community offers the students a chance to hone their skills in CTE, Personal Finance, Child Development, Internship, Education Professions, Food Science, Nutrition Science, Human Development and Wellness.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I was published in the Journal of Biological Education in 2002 for an article, Interactive Learning: A teaching model a model for biotechnology and genomics education. I have had the opportunity to mentor several student teachers over the years.

My own education history

My education is as diverse as my interests. I have a B.S. in Horticulture Science and a M.S. in Curriculum and Instructions with an Emphasis on Youth Development. A certificate in Exceptional Needs Mild Intervention, Family and Consumer Science, and 7-12 ELA.
