This lab provides two chemical reactions for students to perform in groups (endothermic and exothermic) and one teacher demonstration reaction (elephant toothpaste). After each reaction the students can reflect on which type of reactions they performed/observed and they are introduced the counting atoms and balancing equations for chemical reactions.
This lab requires two separate days for data collection to show the effects of osmosis using dissolved shell eggs and two solutions (Solution A - Hypotonic and Solution B - Hypertonic). The students will find starting and ending mass to calculate percent change in mass and graph their findings. Students will then reflect on which type of solutions each would be classified and what would be considered an Isotonic solution if one were given.
