This graphic organizer is helpful for students when actively reading non-fiction text. The layout helps them to identify: 3 Things I Discovered 2 Things That Were Interesting 1 Thing I Still Have a Question About
Students use this graphic organizer to create their own questions about an article. They must identify the excerpt from the text the question is based upon. Then create their own question. Students can then provide the answer or exchange worksheets with a partner who must answer the question.
Students read independently and identify 5 key ideas from the reading. In pairs, students compare ideas and identify the 3 most important. As a whole class, they present the ideas they found in the reading and the class must discuss to decide the one main idea of the article.
This pre-writing activity can help students identify the main idea of an article and select the textual evidence they will use to support their claim before they begin writing.
