In this 4 lesson mini unit, students will analyze the story elements in an episode of The Andy Griffith Show. The unit was created to align with the new Common Core Standards. The students begin the unit with a study of the two main characters, Barney and Andy. From here the students will look at evidence to support setting. Next students will uncover the plot of the episode by completing a graphic organizer. Finally students will use the conflict and resolution of the story to uncover the theme
In this activity, students will use a United States Map to identify the place described in the clues. All the places start in Georgia to help the students develop a frame of reference for the location of the geographic features outlined in the Georgia Performance Standards. The students will answer questions that deal with the importance of the location.
This is a 22 question scavenger hunt that has students looking in newspapers, magazines, textbooks, etc. The information the students are seeking to complete the scavenger hunt has them practicing concepts that fit the Common Core Standards in math (decimals, percents, dividing, multiplying, and prime and composite numbers), ELA (parts of speech, writing titles) as well as state standards in Social Studies (geography, WW2, & Civil War) and Science (Animal Classification, Electricity, Cells).
Students can use this graphic organizer with literary texts, short stories, chapter books, video clips, etc. to uncover the theme of the story. Simply start with the conflict and resolution. Next use these to uncover what the character learned. Finally identify the theme.
