I teach 5th grade with an amazing and supportive team. I have been teaching for five years and discovered early on that a lot of what I wanted and needed for assignments couldn't be found. I had to create a lot of what I needed from the get-go, and I am so thankful that I did. This made me a lot more comfortable in creating new projects and activities for the new Common Core standards when they were introduced.
This set of foldables will help your students learn about sound waves, their properties and how musical instruments work. It will help your students master the NGSS Standard MS-PS4-2A: A sound wave needs a medium through which it is transmitted. Each foldable is specific to a different topic regarding sound, including how sound waves work, the factors affecting the speed of sound, the properties of sound, decibel time exposure guidelines, and different instruments and how they make sound. This is a great activity for teaching the middle school NGSS Standard MS-LS-3A: Inheritance of Traits. Students will have the opportunity to draw “genes” out of a bag and create unique chromosomes. Each student’s chromosome pair will be completely different from the student sitting next to them. Beyond that, students will be using vocabulary terms such as “homozygous” and “heterozygous” to identify the genes in their chromosome pairs, helping the vocabulary stick with them better. My 7th gra
This is a great lab to include while teaching your students about food chains. Students have the opportunity to dissect an owl pellet and discover the contents within. Using those pieces as clues, students will be able to answer the questions in this lab to determine where in the food chain an owl and its' prey fall, as well as what type of habitat owls live in based on their diet.
This free game is a great way to solidify possessive nouns in your students' minds. It includes cards for regular and irregular nouns, as well as singular and plural nouns. Use these task cards as a memory game, take-to-your-seat center, or with a cooperative learning strategy. All you need to do is print, cut and enjoy!
This product is a great way for students to learn about mechanical waves. NGSS standard MS-PS4-1 (A simple wave has a repeating pattern with a specific wavelength, frequency, and amplitude.) is covered by this collection of foldables, and it also will help lead right into MS-PS4-2 (A sound wave needs a medium through which it is transmitted). Taking information from a textbook or PowerPoint becomes much more streamlined for students and these foldables make sure they have all the important inf
This product is a great way for students to learn about magnetism and electromagnets. NGSS standard MS-PS2-3 (Electric and magnetic (electromagnetic) forces can be attractive or repulsive, and their sizes depend on the magnitudes of the charges, currents, or magnetic strengths involved and on the distances between the interacting objects) and MS-PS2-5 (Forces that act at a distance (electric, magnetic, and gravitational) can be explained by fields that extend through space and can be mapped by
These interactive notebook glue-ins are helpful for teaching about codominance and incomplete dominance. They help teach NGSS Standard MS-LS-3A: Inheritance of Traits. The first glue-in matches vocabulary terms with their definitions. I use this as a way to identify terms as we read. The second glue-in compares dominance, recessive, incomplete dominance and codominance. The final glue-in gives examples of codominance, incomplete dominance, polygenic inheritance, environmental factors, acqui

Experience
I teach 5th grade with an amazing and supportive team. I have been teaching for five years and discovered early on that a lot of what I wanted and needed for assignments couldn't be found. I had to create a lot of what I needed from the get-go, and I am so thankful that I did. This made me a lot more comfortable in creating new projects and activities for the new Common Core standards when they were introduced.
Teaching style
I teach using a lot of partner and group work. I really enjoy having my students do hands-on experiments and projects to teach Science and Social Studies especially.
Awards & shining teacher moments
I am currently on the Kansas State Science team to review the upcoming state science assessment over the new standards.
My own education history
I have a Bachelor of Science in Education from Friends University and a Master of Arts in Education from Baker University.
Additional biographical information
I find it really hard to find what I need for my specific grade level and content. A lot of what is out there doesn't go deep enough for my liking, so I create projects, activities and worksheets that go deeper.
