This lesson plan contains everything you need (in an editable version) to present a fun, hands-on measurement lesson. The students will have a blast using common school objects as well as their bodies and limbs to measure areas in the school. The students will also learn the story of Oliver Smoot, whose body was used to measure a bridge in Boston MA. Finally, in the extension activity, the students learn to present data to a larger audience.
This is a one-day activity in which students use unit rates to find the best buy between 2 grocery stores. They also compare buying only based on unit rates vs. having to buy an entire package of something. Students are up and out of their seats, engaged in the activity, and interested in the topic. My students have loved this activity for years!
Here are 3 versions of a writing assignment discussing rounding numbers. Both whole numbers and decimals are included. It is also editable, so you can further adjust for your students. It is imperative to be able not just to do calculations, but to understand and explain the math to others. This is also a good assignment to keep in your sub folder.
