This is a fun independent tool to get students practicing these skills. You can use it to either assess or promote cooperative learning. I like to tape the cards around the room to let students move around the room and work.

I use these with my students to spread a little love during Valentine's Day. Students can write a note to a classmate, administrator, or other adult in their school. They love to deliver the letters to the recipients throughout the day. Print on colorful paper to add some extra flair.
