Periodic Trends: Electronegativity; Ionization Energy; and Atomic Radius

Created by
CHEM by Gloria
This group of activities covers the periodic trends of atomic radius, electronegativity, and ionization energy. In one activity the students measure the atomic radius of several elements going across and down the periodic table. Once the students complete the activity it is easier for them to grasp the periodic trend of atomic radius. Another handout, groups all three trends together on a periodic table with the highest and lowest values exaggerated on the blank periodic table so that the studen

Note to Teacher, This overview is meant to inform you of the major concepts and skill building in the physical science course for middle school I put together. I am a firm believer that students will learn the difficult concepts when they are performing experiments which include the collection, graphing, and analyses of data. Teacher demos are fun but unfortunately miss the mark when they exclude the student. Many students lose focus when the teacher is performing the demonstration and having al

This lab activity is fun and is an opportunity to make lab groups for the semester. The beginning of school can be nerve racking for students. This lab activity is a great ice breaker for students within a lab group to get to know each other and be introduced to basic lab equipment. It's so much better to let the students perform a lab and learn about the equipment they will be using all year. Learning by DOING instead of watching the teacher perform a demo is hands down the best way and wil

About the store

Experience

I have taught for 30 years. Some of the subjects I have taught at the high school level include chemistry, physics, integrated science, biology, US History, and Middle School life and physical science.

Teaching style

I am a big believer in actively engaging the student through hands on activities. I employ a lot of color in note taking, especially when teaching the more difficult concepts like the periodic trends and the molar highway-to name a few. I have taught chemistry more than any other subject so most of my lessons cover chemistry or physical science concepts. I make as many connections as possible to the other sciences and to history. I also include lots of writing in my activities because I think it is imperative for the development of their critical thinking and their communication skills. Over the years I have always sought critical comments from my former students who come back to visit me. I pick their brain about their experience in their college lab classes and how prepared they were when they left my class and entered a college level chemsitry lab. I want my students college and/or career ready. I always seek to improve my craft.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I coach the Academic Decathlon team at my high school. We have won the county competition many times and have qualified to compete at the state level. I have been a master teacher for science for many years.

My own education history

I have a BA in History with Honors from UC Santa Barbara. I have over 100 additional units in chemistry, math, biology, and physics.I have a single subject teaching credential in Chemistry and Physics.

Additional biographical information

I love teaching and love to learn. I am constantly revising my lessons in order to make them more effective. I believe in giving my students immediate feedback and I am always figuring out ways to reach students who may have a hard time learning difficult concepts in science. I like to connect the advancements in science to the bigger picture of human history.
