Students in partners or groups of 3 are in charge of creating a business for a trade career (Electrician, Plumber, HVAC Tech, Mechanic) where they determine the expression for the rate they will charge for their services. This works best if you can create at a minimum 8 companies in your class (2 for each type of businesses for competition reasons). This is a great station activity as it is self-checking. Students solve the problems in each box. The sum of each row and column should equal the "magic" number. This allows students to self-assess their correctness.
Students will use centimeter grid paper to create a billboard of their first or last name. Then they need to find the area and perimeter of the individual letters and total name since the billboard company charges by the square centimeter for color paint and linear centimeter for border paint. *Students may struggle turning some letters into block letters so you may need to show an example* Guided directions sheet included. After reading the book, it is now your student's turn to make their own illustration for one of the animals in the book or choose another animal with an incredible skill by researching it on the internet. After choosing an animal, students will determine exactly how fast, how far, how strong, etc. that your student would be if they had that animal’s ability.
