Students will find 3 recipes online, I recommend giving them one website to search through, I use allrecipes.com. There are thousands of options there for them to choose from. The recipes they choose must each contain a whole number, mixed number and fraction along with a minimum of 5 ingredients. They will record the the entire recipe, INCLUDING directions on the recording sheet. Then there is the sheet for work where they actually triple, double, or halve their recipes. An activity where students can plan their own vacation. Students will create an itinerary and must budget for their trip spending under the allotted amount depending on where they travel (within the US $2000 or internationally $5000).

Students in partners or groups of 3 are in charge of creating a business for a trade career (Electrician, Plumber, HVAC Tech, Mechanic) where they determine the expression for the rate they will charge for their services. Students will go shopping at 6 stores equipped with a book of coupons. Students must buy 1 item from each store and use 1 coupon from the 12 they are given each time they purchase an item.They cannot use a coupon more than once. I also set a target goal, for example $600, and the top 3 students who can come closest to spending all of their $600 without going over gets a prize. This bundle includes all my magic squares. They work well as independant work or station work as they are self-checking since the sum of each row/column must equal the magic number. Students must follow directions, and perform reflections on a 4 quadrant coordinate plane to uncover the location of the "treasure." I had a prize for any student who completed the activity and "found" the treasure.

Students will use centimeter grid paper to create a billboard of their first or last name. At the start of each school year parents and teachers alike go out and buy school supplies. Now it's your students turn. I have provided a basic supply listened sheet for work. You can use paper ads, but I used online sales. For my 6th graders, I limited their website options to 2, Staples or Walmart. After reading the book, it is now your student's turn to make their own illustration for one of the animals in the book or choose another animal with an incredible skill by researching it on the internet. After choosing an animal, students will determine exactly how fast, how far, how strong, etc. that your student would be if they had that animal’s ability.
