Forensics: Final Project Simulation Competition

This is a fun project to wrap up the year with forensics students and keep them engaged during those that few weeks of school. This project is always a huge hit with my seniors. Students will be places into teams where they will create their own mock crime scene. They must include each unit from the year as part of their investigation. After about two weeks of planning and preparation in class, teams will investigate each crime scene and try to solve the crime. Make sure to adjust the instruc

Students will use CIA World Fact Book to research countries and evaluate their level of development. The worksheet directs students to per capita GDP, birth rate, life expectancy, infant mortality rate, economic activities, and drinking water quality. Students will find those statistics, list them on the worksheet, determine level of development, and write a few sentences explaining their evaluation. Countries to be evaluated are: United States, Haiti, Ukraine, Cambodia, Argentina, Uganda, Uni

"Deep Dive: Your Personal Finances" is an eyeopener for students as they take a look at where their money is ACTUALLY going... not just where they THINK it is going. They will go through all of their transactions for the last 30 days, and list each transaction in the appropriate category. After going through all transactions and reviewing totals, students will answer review questions. This assignment is set up in Google Sheets Workbook. The first sheet is a set up with categories and formulas t

Investigating Employee Benefits

This is a digital worksheet that students fill out as they research the benefits offered by an employer. It is most appropriate to do this activity the day after teaching about all potential benefits (PTO, Insurance, Retirement, ect). This activity is designed for each student to research the benefits at one job, then compare with classmates, and ultimately evaluate which job they prefer. This is a READY TO GO activity with NO PREP outside of posting to your LMS (Google Classroom, Schoology, e

Human Environment Interaction (HEI) In Depth Study

This activity allows students to find real world examples of HEI, and evaluate how that example is harmful/ helpful to humans and the environment. Best used after a direct teach lesson over HEI. I prefer posting on an LMS, and allowing students to drag pictures from Google for their examples. An alternative is printing the activity as a worksheet, and having students draw their examples.

Additional biographical information

I grew up in Austin, Texas and attended school in AISD. By the time I finished high school I was ready to get away from the big city, so I chose to attend college at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX. After graduating with my teaching certification, I went on to teach in "Small Town East Texas" for a few years when I started missing my family. Ten years, two degrees, and six years of teaching experience later, I decided to move closer to home. I'm now settled into College Station, figuring out how to survive Aggieland as a diehard Longhorn. This background has provided me a unique perspective on education. I've learned the benefits and challenges of both rural and urban schools, small and large. Through it all, I'm thankful for every experience as it has made me the educator I am today. I love my job with a deep burning passion, and consider myself lucky to get to wake up every day and do what I do.
