I just finished my 13th year in public education!! I still feel like a rookie some days. I spent 10 years full time in the classroom and then transitioned over to be an instructional coach. I currently teach 8th grade U.S. History and am the instructional coach for the history department.

Roll the Dice Map Game
A great way to review and practice analyzing map reading skills and use the dice in your supply closet. Laminate the maps and have students write on the pages with wet erase markers. A wonderful group activity.
6th - 8th

U.S. History Cause and Effect
This activity can be done in pairs or individually. Students identify which events/ideas led to various effects. Run off on colored paper to make multiple sets. Have student aides cut out the event cards.

Vocabulary 3 Way Match-First Semester Words
Another way to review vocabulary. Students match word, picture and definition. Having students justify why they chose the picture is great way to hear students thinking and know if they truly understand the word.

STAAR Vocabulary 3 Way Match
Vocabulary is a stumbling block for many students, both academic and non-content specific. This activity has students put together 3 way matches (word, definition and picture) of words that have appeared on our state's standardize test.

Exit Ticket
Exit Ticket---great way to have students summarize what they learned after instruction, activity, etc. This particular one I used after one of our Super Saturday review camps.

Acting and Speaking Like a Historian
This can be displayed as students are working to remind them to speak and act like a historian. You could also print it out and put it through a poster maker and hang it on your wall.

I have my students fill this out this first day of school. I take them home and read over them as a way to jump start the relationship building process. Great first day activity!
