I have worked in schools as a 1:1 Aide for 3 1/2 years before getting my degree and working as a Special Educator. I have been teaching for 10 years now in a variety of settings (self-contained, consultant teaching, integrated co-taught).
These are the materials I used to pair with a story about not calling out. The book is called My Mouth is a Volcano by Julia Cook. It talks about a boy who can't control his talking out of turn and how he learns to control himself. The materials can be laminated to keep them lasting longer. The volcano is used as a talking stick and only the person holding it can be talking. The lava rocks are reminders to try the strategy from the book, raise your hand, and wait to be called on.
Here is a little poem, sort, and extension activity to practice "i" and "e" ending sounds of words that end in y. The sort has picture cards with the words and a worksheet for the students to record their work. The extension activity also provides a worksheet where the students can record "i" and "e" sounding y words that they find in the poem.
