Binary Decoding & Encoding Worksheet

A simple worksheet to practice working with binary numbers. Students will decode a message written in binary code into english characters as well as encode a phrase into binary numbers. Appropriate for grade three to eight. Previous knowledge of binary numbers and counting in binary is important. Counting in binary is a wonderful introduction to computer science. Binary Byte Word Search

This resource is a fun review of binary numbers combined with a word search. There are fifteen binary numbers in a one byte (eight bits) format that the students convert to decimal. They then need to find the numbers in the word search. Please let the students know that there are numbers in the word search that do not match one of the binary numbers. The only worksheets I found were Christmas related, so I came up with this one for Chanukah. Instead of 1’s and 0’s the worksheet uses lit and unlit menorahs to re

Lost on an Island Binary Challenge Worksheet

This resource is a binary number review worksheet that uses the Ascii (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) code. Instead of 1’s and 0’s the worksheet uses coconuts, whole and half to represent the binary numbers. The story for the worksheet is that a man is shipwrecked on a desert island and uses coconuts to write a message for any passing planes. Students need to decode his message. Students should have some grasp of counting in binary in order to complete the worksheet. The

Chanukiah Binary Counting Worksheet

This resource is a binary number review worksheet. The binary numbers are represented by lit and unlit candles on a Chanukiah (often referred to as a menorah for the Jewish holiday of Chanukah). I work at a Jewish day school and was looking for some binary review worksheets for my third grade class who was studying computer science concepts. The only worksheets I found were Christmas related, so I came up with this one for Chanukah. Instead of 1’s and 0’s the worksheet uses lit and unlit candl
