This worksheet has questions related to simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, alliteration, idiom, and allusion. Each type of figurative language has a definition question where students must match the term to the definition. Each type of figurative language includes three example questions. Edit to suit your needs; administer as an assignment or a test.

Students are presented with a photo and the challenge to create a short story based on the photo while implementing the figurative language they have learned. This allows them to put figurative language into practice.

This is an assignment that I usually assign to students during the first week of school. Print copies for your class and hand them out. Students will draw their own character on the front and then write a fictional story about their character on the back. This is a fun, creative writing activity to help get the year started and get through the first week smoothly! I have used this assignment myself for grades 5, 6, and 8, but it could likely be used in a variety of grade levels.
