Conley's Cool ESL

Greg Conley teaches English as a New Language in Buffalo, NY. He has taught stand-alone ESL/ENL, and integrated content/ENL in Social Studies and Mathematics. He has implemented digital literacy and flipped classrooms over the years to make learning more engaging and meaningful. He has focused on directly teaching relevant vocabulary and writing skills for New York State's Global History and Geography Regents Exam and the Common Core English Language Arts Regents Exam.

Kids learn when they are motivated to learn. Lessons should be interesting, clear, and relevant. Students should spend their class time applying concepts, and not inductively learning content. All lessons and materials are flexibly designed to be implemented as a flipped classroom. Students can inductively learn vocabulary at home, and then apply the vocabulary in class. This ives more time to practice concepts and language, rather than taking notes all of the time.

Greg is a co-author of a school designed for Students with Interrupted Formal Education. The school was adapted as the Newcomer Academy at Lafayette High School. It is a two-year, transitional school for English Language Learners, designed to rapidly immerse students in relevant content. Upon exit, students can enter a mainstream school to purse their technical or collegiate interests. Besides his curricular work at a school level, Greg was a part of a collaboration between the State University of New York at Buffalo and Lafayette High School. Participating teachers received coaching and support to implement Common Core Learning Standards and technology in the classroom for English Language Learners. In addition teachers applied strategies to improve authentic, academic speech among students in classrooms.
