Count on Experience

This exercise is designed to show students how to approach a new set of data – always with skepticism. The process includes reviewing the incoming data using various techniques. The data is fraught with errors, some obvious and some obscure. The result is a dataset which can be used for further work.

The Email Game was developed to provide an understanding of how the internet could work. It is a simulation for delivering email. Each student acts as an email server, delivering and receiving emails. However, for delivery each student does not know where all the other email boxes are. They know where some locations are, but not all. To solve this each student has a “dumping” location for all the mail for which they don’t know the location. They move around the classroom delivering what they can

To demonstrate how the office workplace has evolved over time, and to leave the open question of what it might look like as these students enter the work force and how it might change over time.
