An excellent STEM project to explore equations and inequalities, while also using creativity and engineering! Student develop and plan a marshmallow bridge, purchase materials from you using an imaginary budget, and then construct it over the next couple of days. At the end, the students create a poster of their design and thinking. It's an extremely fun project and the students really enjoy the hands on approach to working with money and mathematics. Materials to provide are small marshmallows
IB Applications & Interpretations SL: Objectives: understand hypothesis testing, state null and alternative hypothesis, identify type 1 and type 2 errors, determine use of 1-tailed or 2-tailed test Introduce hypothesis test Null vs Alternative hypothesis Types of errors Level of significance types of tests Examples Practice
A great resource for International Baccalaureate mathematics! Although it can be used for non-IB classes, as well. I have used it for a midterm, but it can be used for an end-of-unit assessment, as well. This research project/performance task is designed to explore Pascal's triangle, its history, relationship with Sierpinski's triangle, and how it is used in the field of mathematics. Grading rubric included.
Performance Task designed to be used as a final exam for IB Applications & Interpretations, but can be used for any high school math class looking for a fun research that takes a couple class periods. Students explore the Towers of Hanoi and the sequence created by the solving pattern.
IB Applications & Interpretations SL: Objective: Conduct a hypothesis test and use a p-value to make decisions Introduce χ2 test for goodness of fit, degrees of freedom Demonstrate how to calculate on graphing calculator Example Practice
IB Applications & Interpretations SL: End-of-unit performance task discovering archimedes' method for calculating area between a parabola and line (linear-quadratic system)
IB Applications & Interpretations SL: Warm up and skills check Introduce gradient of a parabola Introduce tangent line and how to find on GDC Investigation finding gradients of various polynomials Examples Practice problems (CW or HW)
IB Applications & Interpretations SL: Examples of optimization (finding minimum surface area of a product) Investigation optimizing volume with a fixed constraint (surface area) Converting a function with two independent variables into one variable and finding the stationary points Practice problems (CW or HW)
IB Applications & Interpretations SL: Objectives: Use a Spearman Rank correlation coefficient, interpret the sign of a correlation Warm up Review Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient Introduce Spearman's Rank Correlation Coefficient Examples Practice
A great mathematic/logic Thanksgiving brain buster! Originally designed for an IB math class, it can be used for IB or for any high school math class looking to have a day of logic for Thanksgiving. Students use deductive reasoning and logic to unravel the mystery of a Thanksgiving dinner and all the guests! Answers included!
IB Applications & Interpretations SL: Investigation finding maximum and minimum points when gradient is 0 (stationary points) Examples Practice problems (CW or HW)
