Many middle school students that shy away from algebra are simply intimidated or confused by the variables. I often hear; "why does math have letters now?". For this quick intro activity, the "x" has been removed and replaced with a blank space that needs to be solved in order to complete the puzzle.
Allowing choices gives the teacher a better understanding of student confidence in the skill/concept. This is a fun take on the "easy, medium, difficult" options you might typically see.
