I believe in combining the best of Montessori and traditional education to suit the needs of the individual child. In my classroom, I taught with this balance.
Contrary to some opinions, Montessori education does not mean a free-for-all without focus or results. Montessori education is a hands-on, child-centered, individualized approach that in addition to developing mastery in various subject matters, focuses on the development of the character, self-discipline and critical thinking skills of the child. The child ‘learns how to learn’ and how to solve problems and seek answers. I believe that these traits are intrinsic to the lifelong success of any student. I also am a big believer in the hands-on, manipulative nature of Montessori education, particularly with younger learners. I personally feel that in this current environment some of this can be replicated in the digital arena.
I have benefited greatly from ‘learning how to learn’ and continuing to learn and grow throughout my life. I would love to see every student empowered to live with the resilience, initiative and critical thinking that stem from ‘learning how to learn.’
