About the store
I initially began teaching as a high school teacher of 11th and 12th graders. After about three years of that, I realized that though I loved the subject matter, that age of students was not for me. I never in a million years thought I would be an elementary school teacher, until I began tutoring part-time in an elementary school close to home, and I was hooked. I know it sounds crazy, but I love my 9-11-year-olds! I truly have a passion for helping nurture and develop these children into responsible children who will grow into responsible contributors to society.

Four What? Word Problem-Solving Strategy

This is a word problem-solving strategy that encourages students to think in a broader context and place themselves inside the word problem. It helps students develop into problem solvers by using words to express themselves and figure what is reasonable. Encourage your students not to look at the word problem as an exercise in extricating numbers and figuring out what to do with them, but to see those numbers as items that represent something.

Word Problem Solution Pie Charts

This is a great resource for students who have trouble visualizing word problems and their solutions. If a student is having trouble pinpointing the action in a word problem, helping the student break the word problem down into the major actions in a text can help. Can be used as an intervention for older students or for younger students in teaching an introduction to problem solving, and the small directions can be given to each student to put in their math journal as a student guide. I hope

Math Dimensions Word Problem Board Game

A common situation parents and teachers experience is that their child or students can master the math skill, but have trouble applying that skill when given a word problem. I have learned that teaching children word problem strategies is extremely important, but also exposing the students to as many word problems as possible helps them feel more comfortable with word problems and lessens the anxiety which frequently accompanies the students' mastery of this skill. This game will give your ch

Fraction Houses

This is a great resource that has helped my fourth graders visualize fractions to help them compare using number lines. It contains the benchmark fractions: 1/2, 1/4, 1/8; 1/3, 1/6, 1/12; and 1/5, 1/10, 1/100. It is easy to translate the number lines to fraction bars to help those visual students easily compare and order fractions they see. Can be blown up to poster size or given to each student to put in their math journal as a student guide.

My own education history

I matriculated through Bennett College as a Bennett Scholar, and received my Bachelor's degree in English. Then I attended and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a Master's degree in English Literature. After realizing college professorship was not for me, I received my education license through the PAL Program at Greensboro College to teach high school.

Additional biographical information

I received my Bachelor’s Degree from Bennett College in English, and my Master’s Degree from UNC-Greensboro in English Literature. During my matriculation, I taught GRE Preparatory as a volunteer for Evangel Felowship Church's Positive Direction for Youth and Family (PDY&F) organization, that provides activities for the youth and families in the community. I earned my teacher licensure from Greensboro College. I have taught high school and have worked in elementary school as a certified tutor and school teacher. I have taught my students that working hard and not being afraid of failure are the keys to their success in any area they pursue.
