Comic Strip

This is an introduction, plan, and details for producing a comic strip. I use these with my grade twos to provide them a different form to express imaginative and/or personal writing. It is always a favourite language project. We also do this after introducing quotation marks and the term "dialogue". This could be adapted for older or younger children as well.

Sight Word Journal

I use this journal with my grade ones. Every few mornings we introduce a new sight word at morning meeting that gets added to our word wall. Students then go and get their sight word journal an add the word to it. We then brainstorm a short sentence we could write using that word. Students copy that sentence and draw a picture to go along with it.

Who I am- An IB unit on Identity

I created this unit as an International Baccalaureate unit for the transidisciplanary theme of "Who we are". This IB unit is titled "Who I am" and is designed to address different areas of a child's identity such as family, experiences, and traditions. Students are encouraged to collaborate and learn from each other during this unit to discover how they are both unique and similar to one another.

I've taught for 10 years, and been an academic coordinator for my school for the last 3 years.

Teaching style

I teach at a PYP school, melding the IB framework into our local curriculum. I believe in supporting strong foundational skills through explicit instruction and hands on playful learning experiences, while still allowing plenty of space for student inquiry. I aim to make my teaching as conceptual as possible, focusing on big ideas and cross curricular connections. I believe in keeping teacher as transdisciplnaray as possible by moving away from traditional subject areas, and instead grouping content piece together by overarching concepts.

I have taught mainly primary grades, however I collaborate with teachers from K to 7 in my job as a coordinator
