This home projects explores the fairy tale genre. Students are required to read a fairy tale & create a poster identifying fairy tale elements.
Elements included are multiples of 3's and 7's, special "magical" words, good/evil characters, magic, royalty, a problem & a solution.
This project can be personalized and is suitable for grades 1-5.
Wow! Teach creative word choice within your Fairy Tale unit! This graphic organizer encourages students to read one or more fairy tales and search for an adjective describing a noun. Using sensory imagery, they will write and illustrate in a box for sight, sound, etc. My kids LOVED this activity and had so much fun searching for noun/adjective combos. Critical reading, word choice, fun!!
This "fancy folder" book project uses a standard manila file folder as its base. Each side of the folder asks students to break down the story elements of a science fiction or fantasy book. This project can be easily modified to meet your students needs.
Mini Author study! This long term homework project allows individual students to complete an author study of their own. After modeling the procedure of an author study at school, students choose an author and read 3-4 picture books. It naturally lends itself to differentiating because each student reads books at their own level. They will then write a letter to the author. Specific guidelines, student directions and a rubric are included.

Find 3 items that can be measured for their LENGTH, WIDTH, or VOLUME! This is a great homework activity for elementary school students. It's far more exciting and interactive than a measurement worksheet. Students will search around their homes and record on the attached sheet 3 items they have discovered.
This project can be easily adapted to an in-class activity where students search the school for items with recorded measurements.
My students love to buddy-read! They often need structure and guidelines for true partner reading to be effective and successful. I made these rings of questions to support their independence and they work very well!
This is a set of 12 cards with thoughtful questions for guided partner reading. Print on cardstock, cut, laminate & bind on a ring binder. Then when students go off with a buddy, they bring the cards with them and use them to guide a focused book discussion.

This graphic organizer provides your students with space to document their butterfly research in an organized way. There are 5 categories. (name, characteristics, diet, habitat, flight) and as students do their research, they can record information about various butterfly types.
Directions:
Using trade books or leveled books about butterflies, read on your own and record the information about each type of butterfly.
Be a Soil Scientist! Go out to the yard and dig up a dish of soil. What's in it? This worksheet provides some structure to "playing in the dirt!" Students will learn about the elements of soil with a guided discovery worksheet.

Text Feature Scavenger Hunt Is your class studying non-fiction text features remotely? This document is great for remote learning! I use it with books on epic (www.getepic.com) but it can be easily used with any digital or print books.
Create a reference chart with your students to review the properties of addition: Commutative, Identity & Associative. Students fill in a 3 column chart with examples of each.
Get to know your new students! This is a great first week of school activity for upper elementary classes. Includes a list of fill-in-the-blank questions which will help break the ice those first few days of school (or any time). Includes room for "favorites" as well as more personal questions like "What kind of teacher do you like?" and "What could you do better at?" Could also be used as a summer questionnaire.
Do your students need a thoughtful book response activity? This worksheet is perfect for younger elementary students who want an extra boost when they complete a book. It pleases parents because it's an extra "above-and-beyond" activity. The sheet asks for basic story elements, a short summary and an illustration. With 3rd graders, I have also used this as a literacy center while I meet with GR groups.
A great addition to any homework packet! Your students can practice their spelling words 4 different ways! This grid worksheet has slots for a 20 word list to be written 4 times (print, ABC order, ZYX order & fancy letters.
