This is a hands-on activity that can be used to teach linear transformations in an Algebra 1 class. Students will be able to describe the three types of linear transformations - translations, rotations, and reflections. They will use objects (pennies, bolts, beads) to graph lines and move the objects to see the transformation. This is a step-by-step activity that asks questions along the way. I included a step to have students take pictures of their grids (using a digital camera) for engagement.
This is an Algebra 1 lab that I have created called the "Raven and the Jug Lab". It is based on the story of the Raven and the Jug (http://www.taleswithmorals.com/aesop-fable-the-crow-and-the-pitcher.htm)
Students fill a glass jar halfway with water, measure the height, add marbles, measure again, and repeat the process by adding the same number of marbles each time. They stop when their water jar is almost full. The data ends up being roughly linear. Students then write up a lab report about t
