Give this assignment to students to creatively practice with the distance formula. Students will act as if they are working for a company that is designing and calculating distances in a new neighborhood. This assignment practices procedural fluency with the distance formula, critical thinking, and mathematical reasoning. Also reviews skills such as rounding and graphing coordinate points.
I usually use this activity for students to explore the internet and come up with their own notes on parallel and perpendicular lines. I will let students use their phones or computers to look up definitions and examples and fill in the boxes with whatever they find. Then I will have them share their findings with a partner, then with the class. This can also be used as a review, formative assessment, or quiz after a lesson about parallel and perpendicular lines.
