Give students choice in how they show their understanding of fictional text with this reading Tic Tac Toe Menu. Activities focus on elements of literature and can be used with any novel or even picture book.
I use this organizer each week for students to analyze a poem. (I use it as morning work) Each day students read the poem with a different task in mind.
Day 1: Read and visualize and discuss initial understanding
Day 2: Read and evaluate vocabulary (Page 2)
Day 3: Read and analyze author techniques
Day 4: Read and act out with a group (Reader's Theater style)
Day 5: Final words for the poem
Students will attack dividing or multiplying fractions in all different ways: create a word problem, solve the algorithm, draw a model, and explain in words. Just change the problem each time and this will help them reflect on it in different ways as dictated by common core.
This reflection will let students work individually or as a group to practice using various reading strategies with any novel. I use this in my class and it also promotes good conversations in their literature groups about the text.

Each section is explained for students and a column is given which allows them to self reflect on their progress. This can be used with most informational writing and easily adapted.
This page can be used with any fiction book and encourages students to use a variety of strategies while they read and document those for the teacher. Strategies like visualization, analyzing vocabulary, asking questions and making connections can be done with any chapter in any book.
This reading log can be used for homework or in class and encourages students to document their thinking while they read. It is short and simple and easy to track reading minutes for the week. Students read then summarize in one or two short sentences each day as well as list connections and questions. Hope you can use it!
