Desi Schamaun

This will be my 5th year teaching little ones! My first year I was departmentalized and taught 4th grade in the Comal district. My second year I was self-contained and taught 3rd grade for Keller ISD in Fort Worth. My third and fourth year we moved back to San Antonio and back to Comal ISD were I taught 4th again (math and science), and now my fifth year I am in 3rd again (departmentalized-math/science/ss) but at a brand new school and feel very blessed! Whew! I have been to many schools because my husband is an engineer for a construction company so we have to "follow the jobs!" It has definitely been an adventure, but one that I wouldn't trade for the world!

I am an energetic teacher whose philosophy is "relationship first." I work hard to build a strong rapport with my students and make it my mission to let them know that I love and respect them. I then earn their trust, which leads to a beautiful work ethic from them because they want to work hard to see results, and also please their encouraging teacher. For my new school I am reading the book, " The Leader in Me" and it has really reaffirmed to me how important it is to teach children skills so that they can become effective people when they go out into the world. "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" were originally taught to business men and woman, but one of the authors of this book knew that these skills could be taught in more than just the business world, and so, "Leader in Me" for elementary students was born. I've read several books and have been to many trainings, but this book really opened my eyes to how we SHOULD be teaching our students today!

I graduated from New Braunfels High School (home of the Unicorns!) in 2006. From there I went to The University of Texas in Austin to study broadcast journalism, but soon realized that this was not my true calling. After almost 2 years at UT, I decided to make a "major" change, and not only changed my field of study but also transferred universities. I began my study at Texas State University in San Marcos because I had heard great things about their education program. I graduated with an EC-6 ESL certificate in December of 2010, and from there the fascinating journey began!

I am OBSESSED with the color mint! My wedding was mint and gold and so it only seemed fitting to call my blog "Mint 2 Teach!" I love my new hubby, Shane, my adorable puppy, Remi, coffee, marathon-watching on Netflix, getting together with my friends and family, and of course, creating for my fellow teachers on TPT!
