Beginning of the School Year Pretest_Activity - Precalculus_College Algebra
Need something to kick off the school year? This activity is an "escape the room" that serves as a pretest so that you can gauge your Precalculus students' prior knowledge. This activity usually spans 2-3 class periods. At the end of the activity, the students get a passcode which I used to let them unlock my cell phone which has a message displayed that tells them the location of their prize.

Introduction to Domain and Range Activity
Domain and Range are so tough for my students to understand. The first part of this activity is a mini lesson where either the teacher or student-led groups discover how to draw boxes on the axes to help write the domain and range in interval notation. This activity has a Check for Understanding so that you can see at the end of the mini lesson how much your students have grown on this topic.

Quadratic Functions Applied Summative Assessment
Want to show your students an application of quadratic functions? Take them to the gym with this activity, play a couple of games of knockout, and show them how to model their shot using quadratic functions. This activity is designed for algebra 2 students as it does have a tiny bit of trig (the students just use a formula with a trig function in it). This activity leads them through it and works great with groups of three.

Properties of Complex Numbers Activity
This is a very mathy activity where advanced students get to learn the formal proof process for showing parts of the closure of the set of complex numbers with respect to addition and multiplication. This is only for an advanced class and is meant as a challenge to get them to think of math as a language of understanding and not just the applications of numerical values.

Derive Geometric Summation Formula
This standard is very hard to cover. This activity is an attempt to use student language to help them learn how to derive a formula that is really nice to know. I would recommend that you lead them through this activity, but if your students are more advanced, let them attack it in groups.

What is a solution? Activity
I found that my students never truly understood the definition of a solution in terms of a function with regards to a table, graph, ordered pairs, and a function. This activity also includes a Check for Understanding at the end.

Properties of Complex Numbers Pretest_Posttest
Complex numbers are a fascinating topic to me, but my students get way too hung up on the term "imaginary". Use this pre and posttest to show how your students went from zero knowledge of this topic to heroes of the topic.

Experience
I have taught for five years in the public sector and 2 years in the private sector in Missouri. Before this, I worked for a well-known educational technology company, where I created math formative and summative items that fit the state standards of all 50 states.
Teaching style
In my classroom, I take a constructivist approach allowing my students to facilitate the learning. My job is to create the activities to keep them topical and guide them along a path of success. I am a staunch practitioner of a thinking classroom where my students spend the majority of the time collaborating around the solution of a problem up at the boards around my classroom. To outsiders, if might be chaos. We just call it learning.

My own education history
I attended Southeast Missouri State University to earn a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education - Mathematics and a Bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics. My passion for math led me to attend grad school at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and earn my Master's in Mathematics.
I have over 80 hours of training when it comes to working with students with autism, ESOL, and high risk students.
