Introduction to Domain and Range Activity

Created by
DiffiMath
Domain and Range are so tough for my students to understand. The first part of this activity is a mini lesson where either the teacher or student-led groups discover how to draw boxes on the axes to help write the domain and range in interval notation. This activity has a Check for Understanding so that you can see at the end of the mini lesson how much your students have grown on this topic.

Showing Functions are Inverses Activity

Created by
DiffiMath
I use this activity as a way to introduce my algebra 2 students to an application of function composition, proving that two functions are inverses. The activity is math heavy, so I recommend that it is used for your more advanced students, but the challenge is good for all.

What is a solution? Activity

DiffiMath
I found that my students never truly understood the definition of a solution in terms of a function with regards to a table, graph, ordered pairs, and a function. This activity also includes a Check for Understanding at the end.
Preview of Solving Quadratic Equations Activity

Solving Quadratic Equations Activity

Created by
DiffiMath
In this activity, a group of three students will each solve ten quadratic equations, using either factoring, completing the square, or quadratic formula. When a student finishes a problem, they will write their solutions in the correct spot on the answer sheet. When all three students have finished the same question, all three of their answers should be the same.

Properties of Complex Numbers Activity

This is a very mathy activity where advanced students get to learn the formal proof process for showing parts of the closure of the set of complex numbers with respect to addition and multiplication. This is only for an advanced class and is meant as a challenge to get them to think of math as a language of understanding and not just the applications of numerical values.

Show and explain the steps for solving an absolute value equation minilesson

DiffiMath
This minilesson is a great way to guide students through the whys and hows for solving absolute value equations. Use the Check for Understanding at the end to get feedback from your students on what they learned.
Preview of Determine the slope activity

Determine the slope activity

Created by
DiffiMath
In this activity, students must match slopes, slope between points, linear functions, and graphs of lines with each other so that they match. It is a great way for students to practice translating between all of these different representations of slope.

Geometric Constructions Gallery Walk

After my students learn how to do some of the basic constructions, I have them work through this gallery walk in pairs. They have to use a compass and straightedge and show me their results in their notebook.

Great way to show growth early with this. Give one to a student and then another at the end of the unit to see what they learned.

Use this to show growth by giving it to your students at the beginning and the end of the unit. Each printout has four different tests.

A fun Venn Diagram activity where students can show whether a relation is a function or not by using the definition.

After teaching function composition, use this pretest/posttest to see if your students are ready to venture into inverse functions. This is also a great way to begin an exponential/logarithmic function unit.

Complex numbers are a fascinating topic to me, but my students get way too hung up on the term "imaginary". Use this pre and posttest to show how your students went from zero knowledge of this topic to heroes of the topic.

Match the compound inequality on the left with a solution on the right. Great way to assess without being a worksheet.

Use this pretest to show that your students have no idea how to find function inverses. Then, give it again later on in the unit so they can feel super smart.

Great little pretest and posttest for algebra students first learning about functions. Cut along the dotted line and use one as a pretest and the other as a posttest to show growth.

About the store

Experience

I have taught for five years in the public sector and 2 years in the private sector in Missouri. Before this, I worked for a well-known educational technology company, where I created math formative and summative items that fit the state standards of all 50 states.

Teaching style

In my classroom, I take a constructivist approach allowing my students to facilitate the learning. My job is to create the activities to keep them topical and guide them along a path of success. I am a staunch practitioner of a thinking classroom where my students spend the majority of the time collaborating around the solution of a problem up at the boards around my classroom. To outsiders, if might be chaos. We just call it learning.

My own education history

I attended Southeast Missouri State University to earn a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education - Mathematics and a Bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics. My passion for math led me to attend grad school at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and earn my Master's in Mathematics. I have over 80 hours of training when it comes to working with students with autism, ESOL, and high risk students.
