Slopes of Parallel and Perpendicular Lines Discovery Activity
Want to create a student-led learning environment? Give your students the opportunity to practice their graphing skills as well as their ability to come to conclusions with this activity. In this activity, students graph linear functions and use their equations to discover the relationships between the slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines ALL ON THEIR OWN!

Area of a Triangle using Sine
This standard is a tough one to cover, so I built this activity to help lead my students through it. I split up the class into groups of threes and have them work through it at a whiteboard. I roam the room and listen to their discussions and try to help only if there is no activity within the group. If you are interested in a thinking classroom, this is an easy one to try.

Introduction to Domain and Range Activity
Domain and Range are so tough for my students to understand. The first part of this activity is a mini lesson where either the teacher or student-led groups discover how to draw boxes on the axes to help write the domain and range in interval notation. This activity has a Check for Understanding so that you can see at the end of the mini lesson how much your students have grown on this topic.

Showing Functions are Inverses Activity
I use this activity as a way to introduce my algebra 2 students to an application of function composition, proving that two functions are inverses. The activity is math heavy, so I recommend that it is used for your more advanced students, but the challenge is good for all.

Rewrite Formulas Activity
This standard is a really tough one to cover because it is worded so unnaturally and is found within a lot of different units. My way to cover this is in algebra 1 by using the simple example of the formula for the perimeter of a rectangle and then giving the students a couple of examples to work with that are familiar to them. Try it out!

Derive the Quadratic Formula
This activity is a wonderful way to introduce Algebra II students how to derive a formula by testing two different versions of the quadratic formula. It is heavy on the math notation, but don't let that scare you. If you can convince your students to try this, they can really show growth with their understanding of quadratic functions.

What is a solution? Activity
I found that my students never truly understood the definition of a solution in terms of a function with regards to a table, graph, ordered pairs, and a function. This activity also includes a Check for Understanding at the end.

Properties of Complex Numbers Activity
This is a very mathy activity where advanced students get to learn the formal proof process for showing parts of the closure of the set of complex numbers with respect to addition and multiplication. This is only for an advanced class and is meant as a challenge to get them to think of math as a language of understanding and not just the applications of numerical values.

Show and explain the steps for solving an absolute value equation minilesson
This minilesson is a great way to guide students through the whys and hows for solving absolute value equations. Use the Check for Understanding at the end to get feedback from your students on what they learned.

Teaching style
In my classroom, I take a constructivist approach allowing my students to facilitate the learning. My job is to create the activities to keep them topical and guide them along a path of success. I am a staunch practitioner of a thinking classroom where my students spend the majority of the time collaborating around the solution of a problem up at the boards around my classroom. To outsiders, if might be chaos. We just call it learning.

My own education history
I attended Southeast Missouri State University to earn a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education - Mathematics and a Bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics. My passion for math led me to attend grad school at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and earn my Master's in Mathematics.
I have over 80 hours of training when it comes to working with students with autism, ESOL, and high risk students.
