About the store

Experience

I am entering my third year teaching mathematics in 5th grade at a K-5 elementary school in east TN. Prior to that I taught one year of second grade (all subjects) in the same school. Imagine my surprise when my principal moved me to 5th grade! I can fortunately say this move changed my life, for it ignited my love of the intermediate grades and but most of all my passion for teaching mathematics.

Teaching style

"A rising tide lifts all boats." - J. F. Kennedy - I strive to teach at higher level of understanding, all while keeping even my lowest students engaged. Many of my lessons are hands-on activities that include modeling and daily journal entries. I pride myself in my content knowledge - that of my curriculum and what is required by my standards (TN Curriculum Standards & CCSS).

Awards & shining teacher moments

Our system uses the Tiger Evaluation Model, where I am currently a Stage 2 teacher. I was fortunate to recieve high effectiveness ratings for all three years of my teaching experience and plan to apply to serve as a Stage 3 teacher for my system next fall. I was recently chosen to represent 5th grade for my district at a regional math pacing workshop. While there I worked with other 5th grade teachers, Academic Coaches, and TN Core specialists to map out a pacing guide for the CCSS math standards.

My own education history

I graduated magna cum laude from Tusculum College in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and teaching endorsement in grades K-5. Last summer I completed the requirements for teaching middle grades and also added an endorsement in 6-8 to my teaching license. I'm currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction from Tusculum College and plan to graduate next March. My passion and excitement for my content area has prompted me to explore a career solely in teaching mathematics; I'm currently searching for the right program to help me pursue a Math Specialist degree.

Additional biographical information

My husband & I were married in June 2012 and can't wait to celebrate our 1-year anniversary soon. We love traveling, staying active in our church, and couponing (well, that's mostly my husband's thing). In my free time (what?) I serve as the pianist & musical director for our church. During the summer you can find me reading by the pool, learning more about math, and playing with our two dogs - Dakota the husky and Bailey the shy, but cute mix.
