Dr. Nicki Newton is an education consultant who works with schools and districts around the country on elementary math curriculum (including the CCSSM, guided math and math workstations) as well as curriculum mapping. She has taught elementary school, middle school, and graduate school. Having spent several years as a bilingual teacher and staff developer, she has an extensive background in Sheltered Instruction and English Language Learner Strategies. Dr. NIcki has presented at several national and international conferences on education -- including being an invited speaker for the NEA as well as working on a special interdisciplinary social studies curriculum project for the AFT. Dr Nicki has an Ed.M. and an Ed.D from the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Teachers College, Columbia University. She uses her strong understanding of curriculum to address the differentiated needs of all students in her work with teachers and administrators. Dr. Nicki builds upon current curriculum research and theory to provide practical, realistic 21st century strategies in today’s classrooms. Dr. Newton is greatly interested in teaching and learning practices around the world and has researched education in Denmark, Guatemala, and India. Dr. Nicki just finished a book called Guided Math in Action and she is currently writing 2 other books, one on the CCSS Mathematical Practices and the other on Math Workshop. While Dr. Nicki speaks in about 40 states a year, she tries to work inside the classroom often because she loves working with students, teachers and administrators in “real time.” Dr. Nicki also writes an active blog about math in the elementary classroom (www.guidedmath.wordpress.com) and she is an avid pinner (http://pinterest.com/drnicki7/).

DR. NICKI NEWTON is a dynamic presenter who is passionate about helping teachers meet the diverse math needs of their students. With over 20 years of experience as a classroom teacher and math consultant, she has worked extensively with regular and special education students, bilingual and ELL students, classroom teachers, and math coaches. Nicki knows the challenges and rewards of working with students who have widely diverse needs in mathematics and she has seen remarkable improvement in student learning when using guided math groups and math learning centers. Nicki provides practical, effective strategies for planning, organizing, implementing, and managing guided math groups and her presentations are firmly grounded in research based, teacher-friendly techniques to meet the needs of today’s math learners. In addition to presenting seminars, she is engaged in setting up math lab sites and developing instantly usable ways to differentiate math instruction through guided math groups and math learning centers.
