Hamlet Mock Trial

Is Hamlet really insane? At the start of the play he says he will only pretend to be mad in order to get Claudius to reveal his part in his father's murder. Many critics contend that the pressure Hamlet feels to avenge his father makes him go authentically insane, while many believe Hamlet to be stark-raving sane throughout the entire play. This assignment asks students to put Hamlet on trial. Is he sane or insane? If insane, can he be held responsible for the blood on his hands? If found sane

This assignment was born of a room full of whiners. Much like your students, mine think our school policies stink. Rather than allow them to complain without direction, I challenged them to write argumentative proposals. They resulted in a presentation before our administration. This assignment walks students through the entire process, from topic to reflection. Includes all rubrics. I've left my schedule of dates at the bottom in case you would like a pacing guide. Assignments are split betwe

About the store

Experience

13 years of combined teaching experience at the collegiate and high school levels. Whenever someone accuses me of being immature I kindly remind them that I've been in the 11th grade for 8 years.

Teaching style

I believe in choice. Whenever possible I like to let my students "choose their own adventure" -- whether it's in giving them choice on a test or making a project topic purposefully broad. Doing so allows my students to feel ownership over their work, and it allows them to get excited about what they're doing (or as I say, "get fired up"). I believe in a balanced grade book that is dedicated to a demonstration of student mastery across the learning modalities. I believe in leaving space for my students to write the course with me. I believe in empowering students through writing.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I have a trophy. It's beaten up. Part of the top is missing. Where the plaque should be is a strip of duct tape. In slanted black permanent ink it reads: "Best Teacher Ever". The student who gave this to me struggled all year. She clearly had an auditory processing issue but her parents wouldn't get her tested. So after school she would stop by my room and we would work on reading strategies. She showed up and she did the work. Being her teacher -- being the teacher of countless other students -- is the greatest honor I could have been given.
